SEO for plumbers
SEO for plumbers: get more of the jobs you want from Google
SEO for plumbers is the work that gets a plumbing business found when someone nearby searches for the job, like "hot water not working", "blocked drain" or "emergency plumber near me", in Google's results, in Google Maps and in AI answers.
This page does two jobs. It's a practical plumber SEO guide you can follow yourself, with real Australian search numbers. And it shows what we do if you'd rather hand it over.

Key takeaways
- "Plumber near me" gets about 47,500 searches a month in Australia. Most plumbing work starts on Google.
- Google Business Profile and a page for each job you want come first. Suburb pages come after, and only real ones.
- Count calls and forms properly, or you'll never know what SEO brings in.
- AI tools now recommend plumbers too. The same groundwork helps you there.
What do people search when they need a plumber?
Real searches, Australia-wide, from SE Ranking (October 2026). Figures are rough monthly averages.
| Search | Searches a month | Cost per click on Google Ads | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| plumber near me | about 47,500 | about $7.90 | The biggest search. Won in Google Maps, not with one web page |
| plumber | about 40,500 | about $8 | Google treats it as local too |
| emergency plumber | about 3,600 | about $10 | Urgent, expensive clicks, high value |
| hot water system replacement | about 2,400 | about $4.20 | A planned, high-value job: give it its own page |
| leak detection | about 1,800 | about $5.80 | Specialist work worth its own page |
| blocked drain | about 1,600 | about $7.60 | Urgent, and seasonal (see below) |
| gas fitter | about 1,300 | about $4.30 | Many plumbers miss this if gas sits on a general page |
| hot water repairs | about 590 | about $9.30 | Low competition (difficulty 11): a quick win |
| burst pipe | about 590 | about $6.80 | Mostly urgent, often after hours |
What the cost per click tells you: advertisers pay $7 to $10 a click for the urgent plumbing searches. Every one of those clicks you win for free through SEO is money you don't spend on ads.

Source: SE Ranking, Australia, October 2026. City figures jump month to month (Gold Coast plumber searches ranged from about 120 to 1,100 over the year), so treat them as a guide. Most people don't type the city at all: they search "plumber near me", and Google uses their location. That's why your Google Business Profile matters more than any city page.
When plumbing searches peak
Search demand isn't flat. Over the past 12 months (SE Ranking, December 2025 to October 2026):
- "blocked drain" ran from about 1,600 to 4,400 searches a month, highest in January.
- "hot water system replacement" rose from about 1,300 a month in December to about 2,400 from July.
- "burst pipe" more than doubled, from about 250 a month in December to about 590 by August.
- "blocked drain"highest in January
1,600 to 4,400 searches a month, highest in January.
- "hot water system replacement"low in December, high from July
1,300 to 2,400 searches a month, low in December, high from July.
- "burst pipe"low in December, high by August
250 to 590 searches a month, low in December, high by August.
Use this to plan: publish and update the page for a job before its busy months, and raise Google Ads budgets for it while SEO catches up.
What we usually find on plumbing websites
These are real problems from a plumbing business website we took over (no names), and the same patterns keep coming up on other plumbing sites:
- Location pages set to "noindex" by the previous SEO provider, so Google was told not to show them at all.
- Copied suburb pages with the wrong suburb, misspelt suburb names and another business's name left in the titles and text.
- A page for one hot water brand carrying another brand's title, so it competed with the right page and never showed for its own brand.
- A page that had earned rankings renamed with "-old", so the original address returned an error and the rankings were lost.
- Blog posts outranking the service pages built to get the call.
- A second Google Business Profile nobody knew about.
- Tracking that doesn't count calls. Google Analytics missing or messy, so no one can say which jobs came from the website.
None of these show on the website itself. All of them cost calls. Most are fixed in the first weeks: see technical SEO.
The plumber SEO checklist
Tick these off in order. (This list is interactive on the page: tick items as you go.)
- Google Business Profile claimed, main category "Plumber", extra categories for what you really do (gas fitter, hot water).
- Every service listed in the profile, with your service area set and your home address hidden.
- Real photos of your vans, team and jobs, not stock photos.
- A page on your website for each job you want more of: hot water, blocked drains, leak detection, gas, emergency.
- Your licence number on every page and in your profile.
- Your phone number tappable on every page, and an enquiry form that works on a phone.
- Your business name, address (or service area) and phone the same everywhere online.
- A review request sent after every job, the same day.
- Google Search Console set up, and your website's pages indexed.
- Calls and forms counted in Google Analytics, each enquiry once.
- Suburb pages only for areas you want work from, each written for that suburb.
- Schema markup on the site, matching what the page says.
Your first 30 days: a plan you can follow
Days 1 to 7: Google Business Profile
A business's free listing on Google Search and Google Maps, with hours, reviews and photos. Fix the categories, add every service, set your service area and after-hours details, and upload 10 to 20 real photos. For "plumber near me", this is the page Google shows, not your website. More: what is the Google snack pack?
Days 8 to 14: one page per job
Write a page for each of your top 3 to 5 jobs. Each answers what the customer searched: what the job involves, how fast you come, a price guide if you're comfortable, your licence, and photos of that job. One long "services" page can't rank for all of them.
Days 15 to 21: reviews and listings
Send a review request after every job this week. Then check your business on the main directories and fix any old address or phone number. Citations are listings of a business's name, address and phone on other websites, which must match everywhere.
Days 22 to 30: tracking and your first suburb page
Set up call and form tracking (below), then write one suburb page for the area you most want work from: the jobs you do there, how quickly you get there, local landmarks or housing types where they matter. If you'd copy it for the next suburb by swapping the name, don't publish it.
After 30 days you'll have the groundwork most plumbers never finish. Ranking for busy searches still takes months, but you'll be counting every call along the way.
Tracking that counts plumbing jobs, not just clicks
Conversion tracking means measuring the calls and enquiries that come from ads and the website, not just clicks. For a plumber that means:
- Every tap on your phone number counted as a key event in Google Analytics.
- Every form sent counted once, not twice (a common mistake when the form and the thank-you page both count).
- Calls from your Google Business Profile checked in the profile's own performance numbers.
Without this, a report can show "traffic up" while the phone stays quiet, and nobody can tell which jobs came from where.
How plumbers get recommended by AI tools
More people now ask ChatGPT, Google's AI answers or Perplexity "who is a good plumber near me?". AI search optimisation is making a business easy for AI tools to find, trust and recommend. For a plumber, that comes down to:
- The same details everywhere. Google and AI tools trust a business more when its name, address and details match everywhere.
- Bing, not just Google. Bing's index also feeds ChatGPT search, so claim your Bing Places listing too.
- Clear pages that answer questions. "How much does a hot water system cost to replace?" answered plainly on your hot water page is the kind of text AI tools quote.
- Reviews that mention the job and suburb. "Fixed our hot water in Norwood the same day" says more to an AI tool than "great service".
Try it: ask ChatGPT "who is a good plumber in [your suburb]?" and see who it names. More: AI search visibility.
Schema markup for plumbers
Schema markup is code that tells Google and AI tools exactly what a business is, where it is and what it offers. For a plumber it should say: business type (Plumber), name, phone, service area, opening hours, licence, and the services you offer. Here's a short example for a sample business:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Plumber",
"name": "Ferrule & Co Plumbing (sample)",
"telephone": "0491 570 006",
"areaServed": ["Norwood", "Kensington", "Burnside"],
"openingHours": "Mo-Fr 07:00-17:00",
"url": "https://example.com/"
}Ferrule & Co Plumbing is a sample business we use to show our designs; the phone number is from the range set aside for examples. Check your own markup with Google's Rich Results Test.
What our plumbing SEO includes
SEO and Google Maps work that brings calls and enquiries from people searching for what you do, reported in enquiries, not just rankings. If you'd rather not do the list above yourself, this is what we do for you:
- Google Business Profile for plumbers: categories, services, service area, after-hours details and real photos.
- A page for each job you want more of: hot water, blocked drains, leak detection, gas, emergency.
- Suburb pages that are actually different, only for areas you want work from.
- Your licence where customers see it. Websites we build for tradies show the tradie's own licence number, which customers look for as a trust signal.
- Reviews after every job: a simple way to ask, never fake or paid.
- Listings that match, fixed where they're old or wrong.
- Tracking that counts real calls, then a plain monthly report on what came in.
Service areas: plumbers who drive to the job
Most plumbers are a service-area business: a business that travels to customers, like most tradies, and shows an area instead of an address. We set your profile up that way and build pages for the suburbs you serve, so you show where you want work, not only where you park the van.
Plumbing marketing: SEO, website and Google Ads
SEO is one part of marketing for plumbers. Plumber marketing online, the digital marketing for plumbers we do, has three parts:
- Your website. If it's old, slow or hard to use on a phone, people leave before they call. We rebuild your website first, using your own words and photos. You see the new site before you pay anything. Pay only if you like it. See websites for plumbers.
- SEO. Google Search, Google Maps and AI search, building month by month.
- Google Ads. Calls from the day the ads go live, for the jobs and hours you choose. See Google Ads for plumbers.
We also run Facebook and Instagram ads that bring in leads, when they suit your plumbing business.
What does SEO for plumbers cost?
For a small plumbing business, ongoing SEO is usually around $1,500 to $2,000 + GST a month, depending on your services, suburbs and competition. No lock-in contract. If you need calls this week, Google Ads is faster while SEO builds: urgent plumbing clicks cost about $7 to $10 each (above), so SEO's value is every one of those calls you stop paying for. How long does plumber SEO take?
Fixing your Google Business Profile can help within weeks. Showing for busy searches like "hot water" across your main suburbs usually takes several months.
How much does SEO for plumbers cost?
For a small plumbing business, ongoing SEO is usually around $1,500 to $2,000 + GST a month, depending on your services, suburbs and competition. No lock-in contract.
Can I do plumbing SEO myself?
Yes, the basics: follow the checklist and 30-day plan on this page. Where most plumbers get stuck is time, tracking, and fixing technical problems they can't see. A free SEO audit shows what's wrong on your website first.
Can I show in Google Maps without a shopfront?
Yes. Plumbers who drive to customers can show in Maps for the areas they serve, with the address hidden.
Should hot water and blocked drains have their own pages?
Yes, if you want more of that work. A page per job lets Google match the search to the right page and shows the customer you do exactly that.
Do I need a website for plumbing SEO?
Your Google Business Profile can show without one, but a good website helps Google trust you and gives customers a reason to call you rather than the next plumber.
I already buy leads. Do I still need SEO?
Lead sites send the same job to several plumbers. SEO brings calls to you alone. Many plumbers keep buying leads while SEO builds.
What are some good marketing ideas for plumbers?
Start with the basics that bring calls: a complete Google Business Profile, a review request after every job, a page for each main job, and a website that is easy to use on a phone. Then add Google Ads for the jobs you want more of.
Do you do SEO for other trades?
Yes. See SEO for tradies for electricians, roofers, air conditioning, landscapers, builders and other trades.
