How much does SEO cost in Australia?

How much does SEO cost? In Australia, most small businesses pay a monthly fee for ongoing SEO, and the published prices we checked in October 2026 ran from about $250 a month for entry-level plans to $1,500 to $3,000 a month for agency work aimed at trades and local businesses. At ADEL SEO, ongoing SEO for a small local business is usually around $1,500 to $2,000 + GST a month.

Key takeaways

  • Most SEO is a monthly fee for ongoing work; some providers add a one-off setup or audit fee.
  • Published Australian prices (October 2026) range from about $250 to several thousand dollars a month.
  • The price follows the work: competition, how many services and areas, where your site starts, and who does it.
  • Very cheap SEO usually means a report instead of work, or links that can hurt you.
  • Judge SEO by the calls and enquiries it brings, not by rankings alone.

Why do SEO prices vary so much?

Competition

Ranking a plumber in a small town is a different job from ranking a law firm in the Sydney CBD. The more businesses chasing the same searches, the more work it takes.

How many services and areas

Each main service and each area you want work from usually needs its own page, profile work and links.

Where you start

A slow site, missing pages, copied location pages or a Google Business Profile with wrong details all need work up front. In my experience, a lot of old trade websites have location pages copied from a template, with the wrong suburb left in the title and text, and Google Analytics tracking that's missing or messy.

What's included

Some quotes cover only on-page changes; others include content, listings, links, your Google Business Profile, tracking and reporting.

Who does the work

A senior specialist working on your account directly costs more per hour than a junior team, but usually needs fewer hours.

How SEO pricing works

  • Monthly retainer: the most common. An ongoing monthly fee for ongoing work.
  • One-off project: a fixed price for a set job, like an SEO audit, a website migration or fixing a Google Business Profile.
  • Hourly: for advice or small jobs.
  • SEO packages: fixed bundles ("bronze, silver, gold"). Easy to compare, but two businesses rarely need the same work, so check what each package actually includes.

What does an SEO agency actually do for the money?

SEO is work that helps a business show up in Google's free results for the searches its customers make. Each month that usually means:

  1. Checking which searches bring customers, and who shows up for them.
  2. Improving the website: pages for each service and area, titles, headings, speed and schema.
  3. Keeping the Google Business Profile complete and accurate: a business's free listing on Google Search and Google Maps, with hours, reviews and photos.
  4. Reviews, matching listings and genuine links from other websites. Backlinks are links from other websites to yours, which Google treats as votes of trust.
  5. Tracking: measuring the calls and enquiries that come from ads and the website, not just clicks.
  6. A report on what was done and what it brought in.

What cheap SEO usually means

When I talk to business owners for the first time, most think SEO is cheap and a one-off job, and expect results almost instantly. They have no idea how much data and work happens behind the scenes. Very cheap SEO usually means one of these:

  • a report instead of work;
  • automated or outsourced links from low-quality sites that can hurt you (I avoid sites that have bought cheap link packages, and clean them up where I find them);
  • the same template for every client, often with copied pages;
  • a long lock-in contract.

Ask exactly what will be done each month, by whom, and how results will be reported.

Is SEO worth it?

SEO is usually worth it when customers search for what you sell in your area and you have the capacity to take more work. It keeps bringing enquiries without paying for each click, unlike ads. It's worth less if very few people search for your service, or if you need calls this week; then Google Ads is the faster option.

The way to judge it: track the calls and enquiries SEO brings, and compare what a new customer is worth to you with what you spend.

How long does SEO take?

Some changes help within weeks, especially fixing your Google Business Profile and obvious website problems. Ranking for competitive searches usually takes several months of steady work. Be careful of anyone who promises page one in a set time.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. Google's AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT still draw on websites, Google profiles, listings and reviews. The same SEO work helps you show up in AI answers. At ADEL SEO, AI search is part of our SEO plans.

How to compare SEO quotes

Ask every provider:

  1. What exactly will you do in the first three months?
  2. Who will do the work, and can I talk to them directly?
  3. How will you report results: rankings only, or calls and enquiries?
  4. Is there a lock-in contract?
  5. Will I own my website, domain, Google Business Profile and Google Analytics if we stop working together?
  6. What happens to the links and content you build if I leave?

Before you compare quotes, read how to choose an SEO company.

How we charge at ADEL SEO

We don't sell fixed packages. We look at your business, your area and your competitors first, then quote a monthly fee for the work that will make the biggest difference. For a small local business that is usually around $1,500 to $2,000 + GST a month.

  • No lock-in contracts. Stay because it works.
  • You own everything: your website, domain, Google Analytics, Google Ads account and Google Business Profile.
  • You work directly with Wilson, not a junior account manager.
  • Plain-English reports showing what was done and the calls and enquiries it brought.
