Most breakdowns start as small things: a dry roller, a slack cable, a spring losing tension. A service catches them early. How often depends on how much you use the door.

Don't DIY the springs. Garage door springs and cables hold a lot of tension and can cause serious injury if they release. If one has broken, leave the door down, don't use the motor, and call a technician.
