Sizing guide
How big a solar system do I need?
There's no one right size. It comes down to four things: your roof, when you use power, how much you use, and what you plan next.
A smaller system
One or two people, out during the day, modest bills.
A medium system
A family home with daytime use: laundry, a pool pump, people working from home.
A larger system
Big households, electric heating and cooling, an electric car, or plans for a battery.
Drawn examples to show the idea. Your quote is based on your roof check and bills.
The four questions
- Roof: how much space faces north, east or west, and how much is shaded?
- Timing: is someone home during the day?
- Usage: what do your last few bills show?
- Plans: a battery, an electric car, a pool or a bigger family?
Common mistakes
- Choosing a size from an ad, not your roof.
- Ignoring shade that only appears in winter.
- Forgetting the inverter size limits what you can add later.
- Not checking what your network allows you to export.
